Senior advises younger students on how to handle college

When looking back at personal experiences in college, knowing current information at the beginning would have solved many speed bumps along my journey.

Instead of allowing students to figure out solutions on their own, sharing a few details I learned could potentially change someone’s entire college experience.

Some important things to be aware of include the multiple services offered by UT Martin. Family and friends also provide strong support through difficult times, which is why it’s important to stay in close contact with them through college. Other useful advice regards following personal care routines and using effective prioritization, which many graduates might continue to struggle with in their adult lives.

Counseling services provided by UT Martin specifically include mental health support, depression and anxiety solutions, relationship guidance, physical health treatments, tutoring in many subjects and advising with academics or concerns. Part of each student’s tuition goes toward these services, so students should definitely use them.

Close contact with friends and family is crucial when being on your own. This group of people knows you best and cares the most about your wellbeing, making it easier to get through troubles in college.

Prioritizing healthy meals and proper sleep schedules can positively affect a person in various ways. When eating the right foods and getting at least seven hours of sleep, the brain is more alert and functions best. Without enough sleep and healthy foods, staying awake in class and keeping attention on what’s important can become extremely difficult. Basically, self discipline will be learned with the right prioritization, health will be maintained and your body will benefit forever with these habits formed early.

Ultimately, maintaining a decent diet and ignoring bad habits will result in the best concentration and motivation. If healthy living ever seems unfulfilling, use the services available on campus to further diagnose problems and get support as needed.
