Why Homecoming?

The week of Homecoming at UTM has rolled around again.

With the theme of “There’s no place like Homecoming,” UTM is offering a variety of events for students and alumni to enjoy and celebrate a campus tradition. Homecoming week was scheduled to kick off Sunday, Oct. 3, with a fireworks show at Pacer Pond, but a forecast of storms has delayed the fireworks show until Monday, Oct. 4. Events continue through Sunday, Oct. 10 (see schedule on page 3).

Homecoming week offers opportunities to get involved for all students, regardless of interest, from a comedy show on Wednesday night to a can sculpture contest on Saturday. There will also be the annual competitions, such as Lip Sync and Rope Pull. Of course, on Saturday is the football game, where the Skyhawks will take on Murray State at 2 p.m.

For students, this week also coincides with the middle of the semester, which usually means late nights studying in the library to get ready for midterm exams and projects. Stress levels may be high at the moment, considering midterm grades will be posted Friday, Oct. 8.

However, there is an importance in celebrating this week. Homecoming has been a time-honored tradition at UTM and there is no better time than now to enjoy what the campus has to offer.

For students who tend to stress over midterms and overwork themselves, the Chico Bean comedy show might be a great way to find some relaxation during this academically trying week. Even if it’s casting your vote for Homecoming king and queen or walking through the Quad during Quad City, there are simple ways to be involved with Homecoming even if it feels like there is no time to spare from hitting the books.

So, why homecoming?

Because it is a time to indulge in the tradition, cast away all doubts and nerves and be proud of the campus that has become a home away from home. Whether you participate in an event with your organization or you take a break from studying to enjoy the festivities, this is a week to celebrate the campus alongside students both past and present.

Go ahead – follow the yellow brick road during this week, because there is no place like UTM’s Homecoming!
