UTM still one of the safest campuses in state

UTM students have another reason to be proud of their campus – safety.

UTM continues to be one of the safest universities in the state and region with the help of the students and faculty and their concern for themselves and others’ safety.

“The campus safety really is possible because we have a great amount of people on campus, students and faculty. Their ability to care about others is the main reason why crime is down. It’s like we’re one big happy family,” said Capt. Ray Coleman, of the Department of Public Safety.

UTM has always been one of the top two safest schools compared to other four-year institutions in the state, but it’s really good to say that, even with the number of students increasing, crime still remains low.

“The responsibility the people on the campus take on, making sure they are always aware of their surroundings and making sure they notify us when they feel that things aren’t right, are the main components in keeping everyone out of harm’s way,” Coleman said.

A few tips for new students and freshmen are to make sure they sign up for the text message alert system so that if any situation does happen they can be notified as soon as possible.

Make sure to watch all surroundings for any possible danger to you or others. Avoid going places by yourself and always let someone know where you’re going.

“Students should continue this tradition going by developing a ‘security mindset,’ which means you take a proactive approach to your personal and property safety and include safety and security concerns in all of your activities,” Coleman said.
If you think there is a situation that public safety should be aware of you can always call them, 9-1-1 or locate any of the 24 Emergency Call Boxes, which will help law enforcement locate where trouble may be, if activated.
