After 14 years, the UT Martin Engineering Department held its Engineering banquet for students, potential students, faculty, staff, sponsors, and industry professionals.

The banquet was held on Feb. 21 in the UC ballroom. It was held to celebrate the students and to connect them with industry professionals. Potential high school students and advisers were in attendance; they were able to meet faculty and staff along with some upperclassmen.

The event was sponsored by Allen & Hoshall, Forcum Lannom Contractors, Barger Construction Co., Parker, Weakley County Electric Company and TLM Associates.

A part of the department’s accreditation is that every senior student has to do a capstone project. This gives them experience in what to expect in the industry, and they also go and compete in different competitions in the spring.

The groups presented different slideshows to show off their projects and tell everyone some basic information about what they are and how they plan to make them. Some of the teams that presented are Aero, Baja and Steel bridge.

These presentations also helped the potential students see what is in store for them if they come to UT Martin.

The speaker of the evening was a representative from Ford’s Blue Oval City, Tracy Church.

Church spoke about the exciting new opportunities that Blue Oval City will offer the West Tennessee area. She spoke about jobs, why Ford chose West Tennessee as the place to build, and how the company plans to give back while also keeping a promise to help the environment. Blue Oval City is projected to create 6,000 jobs when they first open, with plenty more to come as they grow and expand. They are also creating jobs now as they start building the facility.
