Tips and tricks for freshmen

Coming into college as a freshman can be a scary thing. College comes with a lot of freedom, as well as responsibilities. It is important to start out with good habits and take advantage of all opportunities that college has to offer. This is especially so for finals week.

Here are some tips to help you during your first freshman finals week.

Make organization and deadlines a priority.
Being organized is a trait that can be beneficial in many situations, but especially when you are a student in college. You will have a lot of different assignments and deadlines that you have to keep up with. A planner is a good option to use for organizing your assignments, tests, and other obligations.

Embrace your learning style.
Find out how you learn best and embrace it. When you study in a way that best supports your learning style, you will likely have positive results. Note-taking, word-association, and flashcards are all ways that you can study.

Always backup your files.
It is important to save your work in case your computer crashes. This can be done by using Google Docs which automatically saves your work as you type or you can save your work on a hard drive. It is also important to keep any work done in college that could be used to show off to a potential employer.

Check your UTM Email.
Most faculty, staff, and administrative offices will primarily communicate through email. If you don’t stay caught up it is easy to miss important information. Advising, registration, and billing are all very important things that students are usually informed about through email.

Build relationships.
As freshmen, it is important to network with as many people as possible. The connections and relationships made in college often last after graduation. Most professors, advisors, staff, and classmates will be glad to get to know you and share their experiences.

Lastly, and most importantly, take care of your health.
Health plays a major role in everyday life, and it can be challenging to make health a priority as a college student. It is important to practice healthy eating habits as well as sleep habits. The Student Recreation Center offers student free access to the gym on campus, which makes it convenient to get exercise in.
