The NFL Fieldhouse: First Annual Super Bowl Commercial Awards

Classiest Commercial

And The Award Goes To: Jaguar’s “British Villains” Spot

It’s a bunch of British actors known for portraying classy British villains doing just that: acting like classy British villains.  That’s all there is to it.  SO CLASSY.

Honorable Mention: None.  This ad is simply too classy.

Most Controversial Commercial

And The Award Goes To: Coca-Cola’s “America The Beautiful” Ad

As soon as this ad started, I was thinking: “Oh hey, America the Beautiful.  How original.”  Five seconds in, I was thinking: “Well crap.  This really IS awesome!”  And ten seconds in, I was thinking: “Yeah, there’s no way this isn’t going to get a metric ton of hate on Twitter.”  And sure enough, I was right.  In probably the most divisive ad in Super Bowl history (and seriously, it’s America the Beautiful being sung in different languages.  How in the name of Goodell can that be controversial?), half the country lit up Twitter and Facebook complaining about how the “national anthem” (sic) should never be sung in anything except English.  (Er…well, a lot of them didn’t say it quite like that.)  It’s that kind of jingoism/xenophobia/uniquely American outright idiocy that makes me want to puke.  From my point of view, not to mention from the point of view of the saner parts of the country, it was an incredibly uplifting ad that reinforces the fact that America is just this big cultural mishmash, and there’s no way we’d rather have it.  It’s a shame that more people don’t think the same way.

Honorable Mention: Cheerios’ “Gracie” Ad

Most “Oh No, They’re Seriously Making Another One?” Trailer

And The Award Goes To: The Transformers: Age of Extinction Trailer

As soon as I saw the opening of this trailer, I just thought, “Dear God, please let this NOT be what I think it’s going to be.”  And then it was exactly what I thought it was going to be.  Table flippery would have ensued, if not for the fact that there were no flippable tables within arm’s reach of my seat.  The chair next to me had to suffice. It’s a well-made ad, but still…I hope I’m not the only one getting sick and tired of the Transformers movies.

(Dis)Honorable Mention: None.  You thought I was going to mention Amazing Spider-Man 2 here, didn’t you?  Too bad; I actually enjoyed the first movie, and was excited to see the announcement of a second one.  Sorry to disappoint you.
