Student competition brings awareness to environmental issues

The Green Energies And Renewables Society, or GEARS, is sponsoring a Green Poster Competition where the top winners in each category will be chosen to help raise awareness of environmental issues during Earth Week.

“We want to show people that you can be creative about promoting sustainability. It involves just as much ‘right-brain’ thinking as ‘left-brain’. This is a fun way to get people more aware about the sustainability issues facing us right now,” said James Allen, GEARS President.

The categories are:

•    Recycling

•    Water

•    Energy

•    Food

The requirements to participate are to create a poster in one of the four categories and submit a digital copy and full poster by Friday, March 16. The posters will be displayed and judged during Earth Week, which is April 16-20.

There will be one winner in each category, as well as an overall winner. Prizes will be awarded. The winning posters will be reproduced and used in the Public Awareness Campaign throughout UTM and the Greater Martin Community.

RULES:

1. Any UTM student is eligible to enter.

2. Posters and digital copy must be submitted to Dr. Karoline Null in 422 Humanities by 5 p.m. on March 16th.

3. Posters must include, in any manner, the full public service announcement, or PSA, for that category.

4. Students can enter one poster per category.

5. The categories are recycling, water, energy and food.

A sample PSA blurb would be: “Approximately 70 percent of trash can be recycled. The U.S. is the #1 trash producing country in the world. Each year we generate 1,609 pounds of garbage per person.

That’s over 485 billion pounds of trash every year. This means that 5% of the world’s people generate 40% of the world’s waste. We can reduce the amount of waste we generate by recycling, reusing or repurposing what we can, and reducing our consumption. If we all make an effort to change just a little, we can have a big impact.”

There is also a category for UTM faculty and staff. Any faculty and staff member who would like to participate may do so in any category. Students will vote on the best faculty and staff poster during the display week.

Contact Dr. Karoline Null, GEARS adviser, at knull@utm.edu or James Allen, GEARS President, at jamgalle@ut.utm.edu for more details on the contest rules and regulations. Anyone with questions is invited to attend the informational meeting on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. in EPS 226.
