SGA discusses bookstore plans and library updates

This week’s Student Government Association meeting was called to order right on time. Secretary General Allie Avery started the Executive Reports by announcing that office hours will start again next week.

Vice President Alex Wilson reported next stating that there would be several pieces of legislation coming through the pipeline in the next few weeks.

“I’m very excited about it and looking forward to it. Keep on keeping on,” said Wilson.

President Rick Drewry was not in attendance.

SGA Adviser John Able informed the assembly that advising sessions for what to do with the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in its transition will be held Monday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. They will be one hour long and will contain the same information, but are being held at multiple times to accommodate all students.

Policies are also being explored as to how to avoid unwelcome speakers on campus, such as the sidewalk preacher that attended the university a few weeks ago. Able said to exercise caution in dealing with them, and that Public Safety can monitor their visit.

“If you lay hands on them, regardless of what they say, you will be charged with assault. Public Safety is there to make sure that nothing happens, not necessarily to protect [the speaker],” Able said.

Another preacher is expected on campus next Wednesday. Able hopes having an officer in the area will deter anything from happening.

Procedures Chair John Domanski presented legislation that said a Senator can run for SGA during spring elections. The legislation is a constitutional amendment and will be laid on the table for two weeks.

Academic Affairs Chair Robert Reeves reported that they will be hosting a survey to potentially extend library hours on the weekends. The library is very open to extending their hours and is looking forward to Reeve’s data from the survey.

Campus Observation Chair Jana Vestal said they have obtained the comment boxes for the library and UC and they are looking into where to put those. They have talked to Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Jerald Ogg about improving handicap accessibility in the academic buildings. Vestal encouraged others to give her other ideas about what to fix on campus.

“If you guys have any ideas about things to fix on campus, let me know even if you aren’t on my committee. Any idea is a good idea,” Vestal said.

Communications and Student Affairs committees met together last week and Chairperson Sean O’Brien reported that they hope to jointly host a tailgating party at a game to be held in November. They encourage UAC and alumni to come out and plan to live-feed the game.

Multicultural Affairs gave out a reminder about Diversity Week coming up in November.

The Procedures committee plans to hammer out some of the problems with the Freshman Council By-Laws.

Dana Maurizio, Athletic Liaison, has been talking with many of the different coaches and they are trying to get more attendance at the games and they want to get the word out through different outlets.

The next meeting will be Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. in UC 111.
