Graduating seniors at University of Tennessee at Martin were recognized and equipped for life after college during the university’s annual Senior Salute, held on April 8 in the Boling University Center Ballroom.
The event brought together campus departments, career resources and community partners to celebrate students’ accomplishments and help them finalize graduation preparations.
For many seniors, the event served as both a milestone and a practical resource hub. Maddie Owen, a senior nursing major, said the event allowed her to reflect on her college journey while also taking important steps toward her future.
“The Senior Salute gave me a chance to just really feel celebrated for my time here at UTM and reconnect with some people that I haven’t seen in a while,” said Owen.
Beyond the sense of celebration, Owen emphasized the event’s practical benefits, including access to tools that will help her transition into the workforce.
“It also gave me a chance to update my resume and gather some resources that I can use after I graduate,” said Owen.
The event is organized in part by the university’s Office of Career Services, which focuses on preparing students for careers and post-graduate opportunities.
Demetrius Robinson, Director of Career Services, said the Senior Salute is designed to serve as a one-stop event where students can access everything they need before graduation.
“Senior Salute is designed to help them after graduation,” said Robinson. “We have employers here, grad school programs here, but also we have the resources here now.”
Robinson explained that the event combines both celebration and preparation, ensuring students leave campus with the tools they need.
“I really think that this combination of this celebration coming into all of that is preparing them for life after college, but also celebrating them while they’re still a student,” said Robinson.
Students also highlighted the value of having multiple resources available in one place. Kaleb Almo, an interdisciplinary studies major, said the event provided useful information to help him stay on track for graduation.
“Great event… just the knowledge and getting the information I need to graduate,” Almo said.
He added that the information shared at the event helps reduce uncertainty during an already busy time for seniors.
“It’s just knowing where to go and knowing what to do,” said Almo.
Almo believes his time at UT Martin has prepared him for what comes next. As graduation approaches, Almo offered words of encouragement to fellow seniors.
“It ain’t over till it’s over,” said Almo. “Bad days don’t define you, so just keep pushing.”
Senior Salute continues to be a key tradition at UT Martin, bridging the gap between student life and professional life. By combining recognition with resources, the event ensures graduates leave campus not only celebrated, but prepared.
With commencement around the corner, seniors are taking their final steps as students while looking ahead to new opportunities beyond the university.
Additionally, the event provided seniors with a sense of closure as they prepare to leave campus and enter the next phase of their lives. The event offered everything from graduation checklists to career guidance, allowing students to take care of final details in one setting.
For many, Senior Salute served as a reminder of how far they have come during their time at UT Martin while also reinforcing the support system available to them even after graduation. As students move closer to commencement, events like this help ease the transition by combining preparation, reflection and celebration into one experience.
