Miss America spawns unwarranted racist comments

I can’t believe I’m about to climb back on my soapbox having just gotten off of it less than two weeks ago.

As you may have heard, Nina Davuluri, Miss New York, took the title of Miss America on Sept. 15. There’s only one problem with that: she’s brown.

You’ll notice I didn’t say that she’s Indian American, which is what I would normally do if race were necessary to point out. The reason I’m identifying Davuluri by color is because that seems to be the only thing some Americans care about.

You might be wondering what makes me say that. Well, if you’ve visited any social media sites since Sunday night or perhaps read the Viewpoints section of The Pacer, it seems the color brown means one thing to some Americans: terrorists.

Keep in mind, I’m not saying that all Americans feel this way about the new Miss America. But it doesn’t exactly help America’s case when these less educated Americans are so vocal with their half-informed opinions, especially now that news sites are setting the stage for this loud minority to throw its tantrum on a national scale.

Readers, you know how I feel about this topic; there isn’t anything I can tell you now that hasn’t been said over and over in past Viewpoints entries. I also understand that news networks bringing America’s most ignorant and paranoid to the center stage to drool and bark in front an angry audience is a good way to channel traffic to the sites. To which I must ask: are those networks being any less ignorant?

Honestly, these ignorant voices can be ignored and disregarded as a byproduct of human stupidity.  That is, provided hot topic news outlets don’t allow the imaginary war to continue on their front page.

If you encounter someone that holds this ridiculous opinion of Miss America in person, you are within your rights to correct that person. You would even have the right to be upset. But if you want this embarrassing episode behind us like I do, for the love of humanity stay off the message boards.
