Men’s hockey at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics began February 11th and the United States and Canadian teams are the two favorites to be fighting for the gold medal. Canada dominated the Olympics for decades, while the Americans haven’t won gold since 1980. This will be the first time NHL players have played in the Winter Olympics since 2014, making this a tournament for the ages. Canada defeated the USA in overtime in the championship round for the 4-Nation Faceoff last year 3-2. For the most part, the rosters are very similar to that tournament, serving almost as a preview to this year’s Olympic tournament.

This article discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the two longtime rivals.

Team USA

Team USA has the best roster they’ve had in a long time. This year is their best shot at gold also in a long time. Their list of forwards is stacked with elite offensively gifted players like Jake Guentzel, Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews, etc. They also have forwards with a very physical presence who can establish a dominant forecheck, with the likes of Matthew and Brady Tkachuk.  While JT Miller and Vincent Trocheck are not players expected to light the lamp as often, they contribute heavily to the penalty kill unit.

Defensively, the team also looks great. Quinn Hughes has been considered one of the best blue liners in the league for quite some time now, and he will be a key force behind this team on both sides of the ice. He will largely be expected to quarterback the team’s power play, which will be lethal. Zach Werenski is having a stellar season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, with 62 points in 52 games. Both of these defensemen will definitely get the chance to work on the power play unit.

In terms of more physical defenseman, Charlie McAvoy is one of the best. The Boston Bruin and Long Beach, New York native has 4 goals and 35 assists in 45 games.

Goaltending is not a huge problem for the team. In between the pipes will be a triple goalie tandem of Connor Hellebuyck, Jack Oettinger and Jeremy Swayman. Hellebuyck, who just won a Vezina trophy last year with the Winnipeg Jets, hasn’t been as impressive as he was last year, with a goals against average (GAA) of 2.79 and an average save percentage of .900. These numbers are still solid for how mediocre the Jets have been playing this season. Oettinger has also been solid for the Dallas Stars, with a GAA of 2.73 and save percentage of .897. Swayman has similar numbers with a GAA of 2.92 and save percentage of .903.

One thing I am worried about for this team is Auston Matthews assuming the captaincy again. Matthews has always been a player who disappears in the biggest moments. Matthews has played in six game sevens with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and has yet to score a goal in any of them. That is not a player you want to lead the locker room in an elimination game. He is an exceptionally gifted forward, but I do not believe he is deserving of the Captain title.

Team Canada

With all of the praise I just gave Team USA, I have to admit the Canadian team looks like the Avengers. Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon all on the same roster sounds, ultimately, terrifying. What’s even more horrifying is the fact this trio of hockey titans will likely all be on the same power play unit. The list of elite forwards doesn’t end there with youngster Macklin Celebrini making the team, who has had an incredible season. The team will have three of the biggest “pests” in the league with veteran Brad Marchand (the rat king himself), Sam Bennett and Tom Wilson. These players, if put on the same line, will be a nightmare to see on the ice, as they are not afraid to play the body and establish a mean forecheck.

However, I am not too confident in the team’s defensive units. Cale Makar is one of the best defenseman in the league but I am not sure any other defensemen on the team comes close, at least offensively. It seems Team Canada is more focused on attempting a total shutdown of Team USA’s offense. I’d have to say Team USA has the Canadians beat with their lineup of blue liners.

Goaltending is where it gets sticky for Team Canada. Jordan Binnington was controversially named one of the starters for the team and he has not been having a great season. He was phenomenal for Team Canada during the 4-Nations Face-Off, but his stats this season look quite concerning if you’re Canada. A horrible GAA of 3.65 and very subpar .864 save percentage. Binnington is a goalie who, time and time again, has proven he can play in big moments.

However, we should wait and see how this time turns out. Darcy Kuemper is another goalie for Team Canada, and he’s been solid this year with the Los Angeles Kings, with a GAA of 2.59 and save percentage of .900. Logan Thompson, the final goalie for Team Canada, has been playing really well with the Washington Capitals this season. He boasts a GAA of 2.45 and a save percentage of .912.,the best of all the goalies I mentioned.

Team USA will come up on top and finally triumph over Team Canada this year. If I had to bet on the final score I’d say it’ll be 4-3 with Jack Eichel scoring the OT game winner.
