Iota Phi Theta kicks off the semester with their Pre-Greek Week

A week of fun, community service and sex education is what the fraternity of Iota Phi Theta is offering the students of UTM.

During Feb. 27-March 1, the fraternity of Iota Phi Theta will be hosting events for their Pre-Greek Week.

The fraternity will start off their week by giving back to the community on and off of the campus. They will be visiting the Boys & Girls Club in Union City, Tenn. as well as picking up the ladies trash in the main dorms.

“We’re going to connect with the children, people would be surprised to know how much a person could impact the future of a child. Someone might not be there to be a good role model for them and being there to step in is a good feeling,” said Kar Howard, president of Iota Phi Theta and senior Criminal Justice major.

The next event of the week, which is called “Silent Library,” will take place in the Boling University Center. The event will be just like the television show, where the noise is the players’ worst enemy.

“Essentially the event is … you do something ridiculous and if your friends laugh at you too loud in an area you lose,” Howard added.

One thing that the Vice President of the organization is looking forward to is the third event of the week, which is “She’s Just Not That Into You,” a forum event for women to speak their minds on sex and love.

“I feel like this will help a lot of guys out on campus and the women can explain what kinds of things they do and don’t like,” said Justin Bailey, vice president of Iota Phi Theta and junior Criminal Justice major.

To finish off their pre-week, the organization will hold an event called “Sex Jeopardy.” It will be similar to well-known game but with a sex educational twist.

“It’s educational, but it’s also full of random things that people don’t know and will be interesting to know,” said Howard.

“The pre-week is just a taste of what our actual week is going to be,” said Bailey.  “The Iota’s are still a young fraternity.  We’ve only existed since 2010, and we’re still trying to establish ourselves and show the campus our identity.”

Dexter Dockery, junior communications major and business manager of Iota Phi Theta, explains that he’s looking forward to the whole week.

“I just want everything to go according to plan and to see everyone come out and learn something,” said Dockery.
