Homecoming 2019 to be a big-top celebration

The 2019 UTM Homecoming Week themed “Come One, Come All to the Greatest University of All — UTM!” will take place Oct. 28-Nov. 3, inviting all current students and alumni to campus for multiple events during the week.

“Homecoming is a special time at UTM. It brings our students, faculty and staff together to celebrate all the traditions we love about our campus,” Chancellor Keith Carver said. “Perhaps more importantly, it’s an opportunity for our alumni to come back to UTM and reconnect with friends.”

Alumni are invited to return to their alma mater and show their pride by participating in the week’s festivities. Distinguished alumni will be recognized during the annual Chancellor’s Brunch and Alumni Awards Program on Nov. 2.

Award recipients include Mary-Katherine Hill, a 2012 graduate, Chris Pierce, a 1990 graduate, and Bill and Roseann Nunnelly, a 1970 graduate and his wife who recently bequeathed a $22 million gift to the university to fund education for rural Tennessee students.

“We are looking forward to seeing UTM alumni back on campus for the 2019 Homecoming Week,” said Jacquelyn Johnson, assistant vice chancellor of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving.

“We hope they will bring their families to enjoy the UTM spirit and to reconnect with their university.”

The first round of Rope Pull, an intense game of tug-of-war among UTM sororities and fraternities, will begin at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 behind the Student Recreation Center. Greek teams will compete each day of the week leading up to the Rope Pull Championships at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 1.

Annual events such as Lip Sync, Pyramid and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Step Show are included in this year’s schedule along with a couple of new events, including a costume party, Public Relations Student Society of America’s “Murder Under the Big Top” and NPHC’s Silent Party.

The week’s events lead up to the main celebration on Nov. 2, with Quad City opening at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Skyhawk football game against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at Hardy M. Graham Stadium.

Festivities will conclude with the annual Homecoming Brunch at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 3 in the Skyhawk Dining Hall. Students, faculty and staff with meal plans may use a meal swipe or Captain’s Cash for Sunday’s brunch.  For visitors and students without meal plans, brunch prices are $12.21 for adults and $5.78 for children under the age of 12.

Homecoming registration, which includes Quad City food tickets, football game tickets and a homecoming T-shirt, is open at utmforever.com/homecoming.

T-shirts, which range from $15-$22 and come in short- and long-sleeve options, are also available for purchase at the Dunagan Alumni Center from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
