Greeks to host (Wo)Men’s Health Week

The College Panhellenic Council (CPC) and Interfraternity Council (IFC) are hosting a women and men’s health awareness week Nov. 18-22.

UTM fraternities and sororities have paired up to raise awareness for a different topic of health each day, including mental and sexual health, breast and prostate cancer, distracted driving and alcohol safety. The organizations will be tabling in the UC. UTM students are invited to stop by and learn about a new topic each day.

In addition to tabling, there will also be after-hours events. On Tuesday, Nov. 19, Savannah Williams, a senior Secondary Education major from Newbern, will be hosting a self-defense class at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center. The entry fee is one item of donation for Refuge Memphis, a nonprofit organization in Memphis that provides food, clothing, emergency shelter and education for families in need in Shelby County.

The IFC will be hosting a chili cook-off on Thursday, Nov. 21. Entrance is $5 for chili, or $7 for chili and participation in the Cake Walk. Proceeds from the event will go to the Movember Foundation, a global nonprofit organization tackling men’s mental and physical health.

On Friday, Nov. 22, there will be an inflatable obstacle course set up in the quad. It is $2 for one run, or $5 for three runs through the course; the fastest runs at the end of the day will receive prizes. Proceeds from this event will also go towards Refuge Memphis.

“I’m really excited I get to work with IFC to help raise money for Refuge Memphis and the Movember foundation,” Tori Lay, vice president of Administration. said. “We have worked really hard and are really proud of it.”

The two councils will also be accepting donations throughout the week for Refuge Memphis. The mission is designed to help break the cycles of generational poverty, crime and social program dependence in Shelby County.

Donation items needed include: art supplies, various sized diapers, feminine hygiene products, Walmart gift cards, backpacks, travel size deodorant, packaged men and women’s underwear and socks (various sizes), tooth brushes, toothpaste and chapstick.
