Golden Globe Awards Fashion: Hit or Miss?

The Golden Globe Awards usually bring along a slew of interesting outfit choices and the 2019 awards were no exception.

Sandra Oh stole the show with her gowns throughout the night, outfitted by Gwyneth Paltrow’s stylist Elizabeth Saltzman. Her gown for the red carpet was a white, floor-length Versace with a statement sleeve. During the opening monologue, Oh wore a bright red blazer dress. Oh won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Drama; to receive her award, she wore a white Stella McCartney gown with gold, sequin sleeves and a bateau neckline. Each dress that she wore during the night gave her a look of elegance and poise.

Emily Blunt wore a gorgeous embroidered dress from Alexander McQueen. It featured designs of flowers, horses, swans and the sun. The dress was inspired by medieval patterns and her jewelry was taken from 19th-century designs. The gown was reminiscent of something my grandmother would use to decorate her table, but I mean that in the best way possible.

Billy Porter made a huge statement on the red carpet this year. His suit was designed by Randi Rahm, with hand-embroidery on the jacket and a pink lined, floor-length cape. Though this design for Porter’s outfit took a total six months to create, it succeeded in demonstrating his style and confidence.

Lady Gaga showed up to the red carpet in, quite literally, a big way. The singer wore a massive periwinkle Valentino Haute Couture gown. People on Twitter pointed out that the color of her dress was an homage to Judy Garland, who wore a similar colored dress in the 1954 version of A Star is Born.

One of the more subtle dresses of the night was worn by Constance Wu. She wore a nude Vera Wang gown with a bustier top, a tulle bottom and a simple orange bow tied around the middle. Although it was simple, it was very beautiful. It was definitely one of my favorite dresses of the night.

One outfit that I didn’t jive with was worn by Janelle Monáe. She wore a Chanel tweed dress with a thin, white, knit gown underneath. The dress had many patterns including denim and tweed. While Monáe looked stunning, the dress just wasn’t my style.

Another off look of the night, in my opinion, was D’Arcy Carden’s dress. She wore a Rosie Assoulin design. The dress was orange with blue neck straps. While I think these colors go great together (Go Skyhawks!), Carden looked like she was going to a Florida Gators game.

All in all, the looks for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards were interesting and very fun to see.
