Video Game Recommendations: ‘WARDOGS’

‘WARDOGS’ is an online multiplayer PVP (player vs player) first person shooter by British video game developer Bulkhead. The game was released into early access on Sept. 10, 2026 for the PC and is not currently on consoles. The developers have said they intend to bring the game to the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S in 2028.

‘WARDOGS’ borrows elements from other gaming franchises such as ‘Battlefield’ and ‘Arma’. This is evident in that the game features large scale battles with 100 players split across three distinct teams. It also includes vehicles such as helicopters, tanks and trucks. What separates ‘WARDOGS’ from these titles is its inclusion of an economy system, so players familiar with ‘Escape from Tarkov’ will feel right at home with it.

Unlike other games, the player has a limited amount of money that persists between matches, meaning that everything from weapons and ammo to special equipment has a cost. This makes the player consider what gear they bring in, balancing the utility of a piece of equipment with its cost. This system is also used to encourage teamplay, as almost every action, like contesting objectives and reviving downed teammates, has a cash reward associated with it. Even transporting other players yields rewards based on how long the transported players live and if they get any kills.

This ties in with ‘WARDOGS’ main game mode, a king of the hill style mode. In the center of the map is a 2000 meter wide control zone referred to as the CZ. Whichever team keeps the most players in the control zone can begin scoring points. The game ends when one of the three teams scores 100 points, but within the control zone is the “hot zone”.

Within the hot zone all rewards are doubled, but more importantly all players in the hot zone (HZ) are counted twice. This means that having five players in the HZ is equivalent to having 10 players in the regular CZ. The catch is that the HZ is small and moves around within the CZ. This keeps fights dynamic and discourages players from sitting in one part of the map for an entire match.

The game features building mechanics and players can build drills that, when supplied with fuel (which must also be bought and delivered by your team), pull the HZ towards their location. This system also allows players to build bases. With the ability to build also comes the ability to destroy other team’s bases, and the game provides ample tools to do so. From covert methods like prying doors open to less discrete tools like rocket launchers and even artillery, freedom of choice is a major part of what makes ‘WARDOGS’ such a refreshing title despite not necessarily doing anything completely original.

The game does have issues, most commonly cited is the balance surrounding higher end gear and weapons and the disparity it creates between new and experienced players. Another common complaint is how long it takes to unlock new items, especially as the developers have stated that a wipe of all players’ progress will occur with each new season. This can be frustrating for some players who expect more persistence out of the game.

Although the community has some complaints, the game is still in active development and, according to Bulkhead, will continue to receive updates up to and beyond its full release. With season two having its release date set for Oct. 15, 2026, more content will come in the form of four new weapons, balance changes, new vehicles and a dynamic weather system.

For anyone interested in large scale battles featuring vehicles, base building and an in-game economy that adds weight to every action, ‘WARDOGS’ makes for a perfect purchase. Season two’s progress wipe will mark a great entry point for new players.
