UT Martin’s three-time award winning literary and arts magazine, “The Switch,” revealed its newest edition at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23 in the Andy Holt Humanities Building.

Releasing to the public in early May, “The Switch” gathers a multitude of different literature, paintings, poems, sketches, graphics and sculptures made by the Skyhawks of UT Martin.

This year, “The Switch” was led by editor Elle Edwards, a senior English major with a concentration in creative writing from Munford.

Since “The Switch” is a publication that only releases one issue each school year, Edwards noted that there is typically a struggle to make sure that everyone stays on board and contributes to the lengthy process. Despite this, they are very pleased with how diligently everyone worked to complete the yearly issue.

“I’m just really happy that we had so many contributors and that we were able to create an edition with so much variety,” they said.

As editor, Edwards allowed many of the different writers, artists and poets to present their most noteworthy contributions to celebrate the launch.

One of these students was Laura Telfer, a senior studio art major from Jackson who is planning to attend the Trinity School of Medicine shortly.

For “The Switch,” Telfer contributed an exquisite ceramic piece that depicted a human heart titled, “Ceramic Heart Vase.”

“I love working with ceramics because it’s a very hands-on, creative process and it has a lot of problem solving and innovation, and I feel like that’s similar to medical school because it’s also a lot of problem solving and kind of hands-on also,” Telfer said.

Edwards felt that the cover piece, “Sir Edward,” crafted by junior graphic design major Emily Brown, the art editor, was one of the strongest pieces.

“I think this photo, the ‘Sir Harry’ photo, is one of my personal favorites. I’m not sure if I would say it represents the entire Switch, but I definitely think it’s a treat to look at,” said Edwards.

Serving as the magazine’s faculty advisor its four previous editions, English professor Maari Carter is happy with the newest edition of “The Switch” and is proud of all the hard work students have put into its preparation.

“I think that every single thing that they do in support of this magazine, whether it is promoting it online, whether it’s the long hours spent proofreading the issue, whether it’s, soliciting work from others, they do a lot of things behind the scenes that often goes unnoticed,” said Carter.

Carter looks forward to finding out what “The Switch’s” future holds, as more students choose to display their riveting works of art and literature.

“I just want to increase the visibility of the magazine across campus. I think it’s important to have a variety of voices, a variety of perspectives, because that’s only going to contribute to variety in the magazine,” said Carter.
