UTM students bring home conference honors

Several students from UTM Department of Communications earned awards during the Southeast Journalism Conference held Feb. 14-16 at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.

Competition was divided into previously submitted work and on-site competitions.

For work submitted from the previous semester, Olivia Johnston, a fall 2018 graduate from Hohenwald, won second place in the category for best radio hard news reporter, and Jillianne Moncrief, a junior from McLemoresville, won second place for best radio feature news reporter. Jenson Greenburg, a senior from Cordova, also won third place for best college journalist and a $250 cash award.

In the on-site competitions, Sarah Knapp, a senior from Moscow, won second place for sports photography, and Brooke Boshers, a junior from Mt. Pleasant; Kait Scott, a senior from Martin; and Emily Wilson, a junior from Lawrenceburg, collectively won second place in the public relations campaign team competition.

WUTM 90.3 FM “The Hawk,” UTM’s student-run campus radio station, won first place for best audio newscast for the fourth consecutive year and second place in the “Best College Radio Station in the South” competition. The station has had eight first-place finishes in this category since its inception in 2005.
