UTM soccer struggles again in hunt for second win

The Skyhawks leave Cookeville with another tie on the season, this time to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, with a final score of 1-1.

During this game, the Skyhawks put up an impressive resume on the stat sheet, totaling eight shots, all of which were on goal, senior goalkeeper Mac Titus’s seven saves, and a 50-minute goal by senior defender Shayla Addington, set up by redshirt sophomore midfielder Ayja McCleary.

Just as the Skyhawks thought they were going to add to the win column, the Golden Eagles’ senior forward Katie Toney scored in the 89th minute to hold the Skyhawks to a draw. The Golden Eagles were not as impressive, but still on par with the Skyhawks this game, totaling 18 shots with only eight on goal. Golden Eagles senior goalkeeper Maggie Conrad had an identical performance to Titus, allowing one goal but totaling seven saves.

The Skyhawks now travel to Morehead, KY, to take on the OVC ninth-ranked Morehead State Eagles. The Eagles’ only OVC win is against tenth-ranked Western Illinois. The Skyhawks will need to find an offensive stride against a weak Eagles defense that has given up 35 total goals, with eight of those coming in the last two games against OVC opponents, Tennessee Tech and Little Rock. The Skyhawks have only given up 13 total goals.

For the Eagles, their leading scorers are senior midfielder Kennedy Baquero with two goals and five total points and freshman defender Faith Peper with two goals and four total points. Compared to the Skyhawks’ leading scorers who remain the same from the last matchup, junior forward Peyton Cook and sophomore defender Anna Østergaard Ibsen. Cook leads with three goals and eight total points, and Østergaard Ibsen with two goals and four total points.
