The UT Martin Skyhawks women’s soccer team went undefeated through their first five games of the season, a first for the program. With a current record of 1-1-5, the Skyhawks are having a completely different season compared to last year’s.

Last year, the Skyhawks remained winless until their eleventh game of the season against the Lindenwood Lions. It only took until their second matchup this season to earn a win with a 4-0 domination over the Chicago State Cougars.

The Skyhawks clinched their best start in school history with a tie against the Murray State Racers on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026. The Skyhawks struck first with a goal from junior forward Daksha Sutharshan in the 44′ minute. Senior forward Peyton Cook proceeded to pad the Skyhawk lead, making it 2-0 with a point-blank blast.

Senior defender Reagan Tate managed to get the Racers right back in the game with a goal shortly after Cook’s.

In the closing minutes of the game, junior Racers forward Breece Bass tied it up with a goal in the 87′ minute, making the final score of the match 2-2.

Following Murray State, UT Martin returned home for their second home game of the season against the Marshall University Thundering Herd.

The Skyhawks took charge early, drawing a free kick keeping the ball in the attack, but unable to find many opportunities with only four first-half shots.

The first of three yellow cards came in the 24′ minute on Thundering Herd sophomore forward Wiktoria Mikrut after a bad tackle attempt.

Minutes after the yellow card was given, the Thundering Herd scored the first and only goal of the match off a header from junior midfielder Lea Misch after a corner kick from Mikrut in the 30′ minute.

10 minutes after scoring, the Thundeirng Herd gathered their second yellow card of match, coming from sophomore forward Geovanna Souza in the 40′ minute. The last yellow card of the match came in the 45′ minute for UT Martin sophomore defender Gi Verdi.

Just before half, junior midfielder Unni Wolf fired from far beyond the box, placing the ball above Marshall’s junior goalkeeper Emma Durand into the top left corner. Head referee Don Eubank ruled the shot no good, as the ball did not cross the goal line before the clock hit zero.

In the second half, UT Martin was able to create eight corner kick opportunities and continued to keep the ball in the attack. Despite having these chances, the Skyhawks could not find the net, resulting in their first loss of the season.

“I know we’ve been tying a lot and lost this last one, but I feel its’s still important for us to have the grit and the motivation to continue,” said junior defender Allie Carroll.

Before hitting the road, the Skyhawks had one more matchup at home against the Belmont Bruins.

The Skyhawks dominated on both sides of the ball in the first half. The first score of the game came late in the first half from Carroll after graduate goalkeeper Mac Titus sent a free kick across the field that the Bruins could not clear from the box, allowing for a double assist to Carroll.

The Skyhawks held Belmont scoreless until the 83′ minute where Bruins junior forward Kaitlyn Elliott fired from just above the penalty spot going left of Titus, resulting in a 1-1 tie and a 1-1-5 record for UT Martin.

Despite the tie, UT Martin still put on a defensive clinic, starting at the goal line with Titus having nine saves before the one conceded goal and finishing with 10 saves on the night.

“I think overall our defense, from our front three all the way to our goalkeeping, has been solid all year,” said Head Coach Mike Varga. “The defense has sort of been our backbone of our team. We just need to be able to hold onto that one goal lead late in the game.”

The Skyhawks now go on the road, taking on the Central Arkansas Bears on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026, in Conway, Arkansas.
