Do you ever long to discover a band that encapsulates the nostalgic ’90s rock era of teenage rebellion, long hair and loud guitars?
Well, I think Skid Row would be the perfect band to help you remember yesterday, walking hand in hand and love letters in the sand.
Skid Row is a metal band that was first formed in 1986 and released its eponymous first album, Skid Row, in 1989. The band started in Tom Rivers, New Jersey, and consists of frontman Sebastian Bach, drummer Rob Affuso, bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarists Scotti Hill and Dave Sabo.
In their first album, Skid Row released what may be their most iconic songs by far: “18 and Life” and “I Remember You.” These two songs are probably what led the album to its No. 6 spot on the Billboard 200 back in the ’90s.
“18 and Life” is the perfect rock song that blends themes of youthful struggles and hardships with an unforgettable chorus. The song tells a story of a boy named Ricky who tried to brave life on his own when he turned 18 but ended up being imprisoned for life the moment his life truly began.
This song includes many gut-punching phrases such as “Your crime is time” and “You can’t think of dying when the bottle’s your best friend.” The song is topped off by the anguish detected in Bach’s vocal delivery, which helps set the mood when paired with the threatening instrumentation and menacing tune.
“I Remember You” is a song that was produced at the same quality but is in many ways the polar opposite of “18 and Life.” This song captures a more sorrowful, yet hopeful, tune as the singer tries to move past his lover but cannot due to how much he misses the wonderful times he spent with her.
This song starts with gentle guitar strums as Bach opens his solo with “Woke up to the sound of pourin’ rain/The wind would whisper and I’d think of you.” Before you know it, the gentle first verse transitions into the powerful, uplifting chorus that shouts “I remember you.”
The whole song segues seamlessly from the gentle verses to the uplifting chorus, conveying the mixed emotions the singer feels as he moves past his love and what might have been the best days of his life.
Even though these songs may be the most well-known Skid Row tracks, the band has gone on to make multiple other classics such as the upbeat and frantic “Slave to the Grind.”
After countless changes in its lineup, Skid Row has released albums as recently as 2022 with The Gang’s All Here, proving that the band will always be remembered.
