Vanguard Theatre to premiere musical about spelling bee

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” Broadway musical comedy will be performed at UTM at 8 p.m., Nov. 7-9, and 3 p.m., Nov. 10, in the Harriet Fulton Theater in the Fine Arts Building. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for students.

The UTM departments of music and visual and theatre arts are partnering to host the production, which tells the story of several Putnam Valley Middle School students who don’t fit in but who eventually find purpose when they compete in the regional spelling bee.

Lymonté Thomas, a senior Theatre major from Memphis, will be in the production as Vice Principal Douglas Panch. “It’s a very interactive show with a cast of outrageous and funny characters,” Thomas said.

The lesson Thomas wants audiences to take away from the show is to just have fun with life.

Tickets can be purchased or reserved from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. through the Department of Visual and Theatre Arts main office in room 201 of the Fine Arts Building the week of the performance. For more information or to reserve tickets, call 731-881-7400 or 731-881-7090.
