Slow start leads to Skyhawk loss

A hot start by Memphis forced the Skyhawks to play from behind all game as they fell 18-4 to the Tigers.

The Tigers hit seven runs in the first inning and over the next two would build up a 10-0 lead over the Skyhawks. UTM wouldn’t score a run until the bottom of the fifth when senior Byron Johann would send a pitch over to right field bringing home sophomore Sonny Mastromatteo for the teams first run of the evening. That hit would extend Johann’s hitting-streak to seven games

The top of the six was a quick one with the Skyhawks allowing no hits. They would then turn around in the bottom of the sixth and score two runs off of two hits. The first came from freshman Paublini Luis and the second from Mastromatteo.

The Tigers would come out in the top of the seventh and score five runs which would all but end any momentum the Skyhawks may have been attempting to build.

“We just didn’t give ourselves a chance to win,” said UTM head coach Bubba Cates. “We swung the bats pretty well against a very good pitching staff, but overall we are still searching for consistency in all areas. The good thing about baseball is we will get right back at it tomorrow and have a chance to fix some things.”

The Skyhawks will return to action Wednesday, March 19 when they take on Evansville at 6 p.m. To keep up with the game, follow The Pacer on Facebook and Twitter, @ThePacer.
