Skyhawk golf wins fourth tournament of the year at Tennessee State

The UTM golf team capped off a commanding performance April 10 at the TSU Big Blue Invitational, posting the lowest score in the field on its way to a wire-to-wire victory in the 13-team field.

The Skyhawks led after each of the first two rounds and did not let up, as their 282 (-2) was five shots better than the next best score in the team standings. UTM completed the tournament with a score of 856 (+4), which was 11 strokes better than second-place Tennessee State (867, +15).

ā€œThis was a good tournament win all-around for us,ā€ Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. ā€œWe wanted to build some momentum going into the Ohio Valley Conference tournament and we got contributions from everybody in all three rounds. Iā€™m very proud of the way we played throughout the tournament.ā€

Jack Story led UTM today with a 67, which was the lowest third round score in the 80-player field. Ross Redmont (70) and Tate Chumley (72) each tallied their best score of the tournament this morning while Nick Wolf (73) and Hunter Richardson (74) followed in the Skyhawk lineup.

Playing as individuals, Zach Haynes shot a 74 today while Cameron Smith accumulated a 75 during the third round. Haynes accounted for the only eagle on the day and one of just three in the entire 54-hole tournament.

Four Skyhawks notched top-eight finishes in the tournament, led by Nick Wolfā€™s even-par 213. The freshman out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee generated a tournament-best 12 birdies for the highest finish of his young career, as he tied for second place behind medalist Austin Knight (212, -1) of Murray State.

Richardson placed fifth with an overall score of 214 (+1) while Redmont and Story each tied for eighth place with a 217 (+4). Chumley finished 22nd in the tournament field with a 221 (+8) while Haynes (222, +9) and Smith (235, +22) finished out the UTM representatives.

The Skyhawks will now begin preparation for the 2018 OVC Championships, which will once again be held at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. This yearā€™s tournament will take place Monday, April 23 through Wednesday, April 25.
