Skyhawk baseball cruises past Alabama A&M

The Skyhawk baseball team clobbered Alabama A&M (A A&M) by a score of 12-3, at A&M, March 12.

The last time UTM scored 12 runs or more during a baseball game was on Feb. 24, 2018, when the Skyhawks defeated Southern Miss 13-10 in the second game of a double-header.

Junior outfielder Sean Dixson led the way for the Skyhawks, scoring two runs and two RBI’s.

Sophomore third baseman Blake Daniels and freshman shortstop Tyson Cox both contributed two RBI’s of their own and a combined three runs scored.

Senior pitcher Austen Bullington was credited for the win, notching his first victory of the season (1-2).

UTM began the game at a steady pace through the first two innings and was up 2-0 going into the third inning. The Skyhawks would then go on to score eight runs in the next three innings, going up to 10-2 before entering the sixth inning.

The Skyhawks scored in all but three innings to end out the game, improving their team record to 7-9.

UTM’s offensive showing midgame proved to be too much for A A&M to recover from. Out of nine innings, the Bulldogs only managed to put points on the board in three.

Sophomore outfielder Kyle Redmond (2) and Pierre Brewton (1) produced all three runs for the Bulldogs, with both freshman shortstop Trevor Berkemeyer (2) and Brewton contributing RBI’s.

Freshman pitcher Logan Smith was credited with the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the season. A A&M will drop to 4-14, though the Skyhawks and Bulldogs are slated to face off one more time March 19, in Martin.

The Skyhawks have strung together three-straight wins following their victory over the Bulldogs and find themselves 2-1 in OVC play after a three-game series against the Southeast Missouri Redhawks.

The baseball team will return to Martin to take on OVC rival Belmont in a three-game series spanning March 15-17. Similar to UTM, Belmont is  has a 7-9 overall record and a 2-1 OVC record. The Skyhawks went 0-3 versus the Bruins last year, where UTM was outscored 22-29 in three games.
