One of the worst days to have work on is Christmas.
While some may appreciate a quiet day off or a big holiday bonus they get for working, for the people who go all out and celebrate for Christmas it is the worst.
My very first job was at a movie theater, and the busiest day of the year was Christmas. Many people go to the movies as a tradition. I was one of many people who did not want to work on Christmas. Unfortunately, anyone who did not show up would be immediately terminated.
Christmas at the movie theatre was an all hands on deck all day. Every staff member was required to come in and work. While most places give out bonuses or have some special treats in the breakroom, but we got nothing. Of course, some people brought in treats like fudge, cookies and other Christmas goodies, which were all very tasty.
The worst part was not the work itself, instead it was the people who would come in and say, “I can’t believe they’re making y’all work on Christmas.” For those unfamiliar on why it frustrates employees, it is because we would not be having to work if people did not show up to see a movie.
Some customers would come in and thank us for working on Christmas. They did not have to thank us; it was our job, but the “thank you” was much appreciated because those people know that we were sacrificing our Christmas to work.
Now, I am not saying no one should work on Christmas. There are definitely jobs that require people to work, like first responders. I highly appreciate first responders for their work.
I understand that there are people who want to work on Christmas, but a lot of people want to have an extra day off and I believe that this extra day is deserved.
I think people should not be required to work on Christmas, with the exception of first responders, as many people need them. If they do have to work on Christmas, they should at least get holiday pay.
Everyone who has to work on Christmas is much appreciated, because Christmas is one day I want off.
