Martin area offers outdoor activities for students

Spring has arrived and warm weather has begun luring students away from classes; Martin has a variety of outdoor activities for the young and restless to entertain them during this time of year.

The UTM campus has countless venues for warm weather activities. The walking track around Pacer Pond offers a scenic setting for calm walks or outdoor training. Next to the walking track, students can find the campus tennis arena with several courts open for play.

Within walking distance from the tennis courts and still on the UTM campus, is the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center; the center houses an Olympic size swimming pool for aquatic recreation. Students have access to camping and other outdoor recreational equipment available for lease through the Elam Center.

The fun doesn’t have to stop with these outdoor suggestions. Intramural sports offer the chance for students to compete among one another in a variety of athletic games ranging from Ultimate Frisbee to water polo.

Another chance to join others in outdoor fun is UTM’s sports clubs. Bass Angler, Clay Target and Rugby Club offer specific athletic outlets for outdoor enjoyment. All of which participate in games or championships abroad.

Sometimes, students want a new and refreshing change of scenery not on UTM’s campus. Luckily, there are a few more options for outdoor fun within minutes of UTM’s campus. Just within a short walk from University Apartments is Martin’s own disc golf course. Located next to the softball fields on Harrison Road, the disc golf course was constructed in the past two years and is open from sunrise to sunset. If disc golf isn’t arousing, perhaps standard golf is more appealing. Martin has a driving range located near Elm Street that has lighting for nighttime practice and buckets of golf balls for three dollars. City of Martin sports complex houses baseball fields, soccer fields, open grounds and a fully stocked pond where residents frequent to go fishing.

For students who have an adventurous side and don’t mind getting a little dirty, Martin is home to endless geocaching locations.

“Geocaching is a fun way to get out and enjoy the weather with friends. As long as someone has a smartphone at his or her disposal, geocaching is only a quick download away,” UTM Senior and Geocacher Shannon Fisher stated.

Whether it is geocaching or joining the Rugby Club, Martin has a variety of outdoor activities for students to thoroughly enjoy. For further information about campus activities, please contact Campus Recreation at 731-881-7007.
