Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits was a light novel written by Midori Yūma and illustrated by Laruha. This manga was published in April 2015 and continued through March 2022. It has 12 volumes and gained an anime adaptation on April 2, 2018. 

The second season was released with the English dub on Oct. 15, 2025. The light novel follows a college student by the name of Aoi, who has the ability to see spirits. 

Her grandfather passes away and she is then burdened with an otherworldly debt. An ogre appears to inform her that she has to marry him in order to pay off the debt that her grandfather left behind. She refuses the terms of this marriage and instead offers to work at the bed and breakfast to pay off her debt.

There are great elements of romance and drama throughout the anime, which give you a nice insight into the characters and the relationships that she builds. Her personality is refreshing to see as she doesn’t have a standard ‘protagonist personality’, but instead holds an air of independence as she works through the mountain of debt left by her grandfather. 

The characters are also a breath of fresh air when reading the light novel. If you want to read a manga with romance, drama, and supernatural elements, we would highly recommend this one to add to your list. It’s reminiscent of Kamisama Kiss, but not in a way that feels too close for comfort. 

If you do like titles like Kamisama Kiss, this is an exceptional manga to take into consideration. The supernatural element resembles the feeling of a light novel you might find on “Shall we Date?,” a dating-simulation website. The art style reminded me of those old dating games as I sat down and watched it. The entire experience made it feel nostalgic, but in a welcoming way.
