“Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” is a manga series that was initially released on April 28, 2020 in Japanese and on Nov. 9, 2021 in English. The manga received its first season anime adaptation on Sept. 29, 2023 with major success and is expecting season two to come out on Jan. 16, 2026.
The story blends slice-of-life elements with epic adventure in a fantasy setting. The manga’s unique art style makes the story more interesting to follow.
The manga was written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. Yamada has a few older projects that you can follow if you enjoy her work, such as “Nanashi wa Ittai Dare deshou? (Who is this Nobody?)” and “Bocchi Hakase to Robot Shoujo no Zetsuboteki Utopia (The Despairing Utopia of Professor Bocchi and the Robot Girl)”.
“Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” follows an elf mage by the name of Frieren on her journey to understand her past and humanity after her party defeats the demon king in the beginning. As she is an elf, she outlives her human companions. In her new journey, she makes the effort to understand the human lives of her companions that she hadn’t paid attention to before.
She travels to familiar places and reminisces on these moments while also making new friends. If you are a fan of emotional journeys, tear-jerking backstories and slice-of-life elements in a story, this may absolutely be the manga for you. There are several moments throughout the manga that really make you sit back and think from her point of view as someone who has a life expectancy of thousands of years. The most interesting part about it is just how she views the people around her and the relationships that she both looks back on and makes as she travels.
If you are looking for an epic adventure to throw yourself into, definitely look into the “Frieren” manga or the anime if you have the time.
