Bye-bye free memories: Snapchat’s new fees have users fed up

From dog face filters to sending streaks with friends, all those memories could be gone in a snap.

Snapchat is a social media app where people can message, call or video call friends and family members. Snapchat also allows customers to take photos and videos with the app. Many people use Snapchat to store images and videos after their phone storage fills up. As of September 2025, Snapchat announced that customers have 12 months to decide if they want to pay for Memories to store their photos and videos. Once the 12 months pass, customers who have chosen not to pay for Snapchat may have their data deleted. Customers can take their images and videos and transfer them somewhere else if they want to keep them.

Several people online have shared their opinion on how much they dislike this change. Snapchat has been facing backlash from users about this, and many people are saying they will stop using Snapchat.

As of now, Snapchat will not charge Snapchat+ members extra for memories, so only non-premium users who exceed 5 GB of data will have to make this difficult choice.

“I don’t think I’ll use Snapchat as much. Other social media apps have filters and fun features just like Snapchat,” said Madi Carter, a UT Martin student majoring in veterinary technology. “I feel like people will just move to Instagram or TikTok.”

Since Snapchat is starting to charge customers, people are wondering if this will be the downfall of the app. Prices for storage start as low as $1.99 for 100 GB and $14.99 for 1 TB. Many phone companies also charge for extra storage, such as Samsung and Apple, with plans starting as low as 99 cents for both companies. Samsung provides 15 GB for free compared to Apple, which provides users with 5GB for free. The best option someone could pick is based on how much storage they want.
