Is Studio Ghibli a seasonal watch or a year-round masterpiece?

Studio Ghibli movies have comforted, and in many cases, rasied generations of viwers since the studio started in 1958.

The studio’s latest movie, ‘The Boy and the Heron,’ debuted on Dec. 8, 2023, and went on to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. The movie was a smash hit in the United States and Japan.

The studio’s success is well-known among audiences worldwide, especially young adults. Classics like “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Ponyo” and “Spirited Away,” all released in the early 2000s, became household staples and childhood favorites for many.

Like most beloved films, there’s usually a time of year when people feel drawn to rewatch their favorites. So I wondered: when do people typically revisit Studio Ghibli movies?

I polled 10 students, and the results were unanimous–it depends on the movie. However, spring received the most votes as the go-to rewatch season.

Spring — “Howl’s Moving Castle”
The flower fields and scenery bring forth a very spring atmosphere and a romantic feeling, perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Summer — “Ponyo”

While it works any time of year, “Ponyo” truly shines in summer.

“It’s a perfect movie for the spring, but it’s really good for the summer,” said veterinary technology student Emma Hubbard. “The water in the movie makes you think of the weather heating up and provides the perfect beachy backdrop.”

Fall — “Spirited Away”
The movie’s overall vibe, paired with its spookier imagery, makes it ideal for fall. Her parents are turned into pigs, and she has to work her way up to save them along with her supernatural friend, Haku. There couldn’t be a spookier premise for the great fall season.

Winter — “The Wind Rises”
All in all, it’s a really sad movie that captures that winter melancholy perfectly. It has some dark themes, and the main character goes through more than any person should, which makes it one of the perfect movies to cry along with during the winter months.

Overall, Studio Ghibli is made for all seasons but leans heavily toward spring. The college students polled on these films said which movie they rewatch depends on the overall vibe, the film itself and when they have time to watch it.

If you have spare time this fall break, what Studio Ghibli movie would you rewatch?
