‘How I Met Your Mother’ comes to an end

Since 2005, How I Met Your Mother has been the staple of what a romantic comedy TV series should aim to be. It has brought sad moments, happy moments and moments we will never forget, but the season finale gave viewers the most unforgettable moment of the entire series.

Viewers have watched the characters grow from their late 20s to the mature mid-30-year old people they are now and every step of the way they learned new lessons.

Each character went on their own journey to get where they finally ended up in the series finale. Ted, the main character who is telling the story of how he met his wife to his children, starts as a 27-year-old single architect. He discovers different loves and decisions that he must decide between, all that bring him to his wife in season 9. The entire series watches him grow as a person.

His interactions with his best friends from college, Marshall and Lily, help shape what he sees as the perfect relationship. The series shows us that even in the best of relationships it is not easy to love someone.

Lily breaks Marshall’s heart and his friends have to help support him through that. However, Lily does come back and their relationship starts again; that just reaffirmed Ted’s belief that Lily and Marshall are perfect for each other.

Outside of their relationship Marshall struggles with his own issues of giving into corporate law when all he wants to do is be an environmental lawyer. He and Ted both wrestle with their careers and trying to figure out what they want to do as well as being successful at it.

When Ted meets Robin, the struggling Canadian television reporter, in the first episode his life is flipped upside down. He falls in love with her immediately and for the rest of the time they have an awkward sexual tension between them. Until she falls for Barney, the self-proclaimed ladies’ man and best friend of Ted, she is in a string of unsuccessful relationships where her fear of commitment topples even the strongest of relationships.

Weddings are prevalent throughout the entire series. From Lily and Marshal’s wedding to Ted’s failed wedding, where he got left at the altar, all cultivating in season 9 with Barney and Robin’s wedding which is the setting for the entire season.

Some people were disappointed with how the writers choose to end the series after such a long build up to Ted’s wife. I personally enjoyed the way that the writers brought the story full circle. It was a strong believed theory for a long time about what happens to Ted’s wife, but no one expected the twist of the entire series that ended the finale. They take you back through all of the seasons during season 9 and show you everything that built up to this point and why it has to end the way it does. I would recommend this series to anyone. You grow with the characters and watch them develop as people. You can learn many very valuable life lessons from this series and can get a few cheap laughs.
