Is fall break too short?

Fall break is way too short, but a longer one may not be the best either.

Our fall break has always been short, lasting only two days. But are two days truly enough?

As the name suggests, fall break is the midpoint of the fall semester. This semester, the break falls on Oct. 20-21, with students returning to classes on Oct. 22.

The purpose of the break is to separate the time students spend going to class daily and to provide time for students to complete activities they cannot do during the semester.

It is still incredibly short for a break, though. What are students supposed to do with just two days to themselves? That is not even enough time to go on vacation.

According to The Rocket, fall break is as small as it is to even out with the break time of the spring semester. Fall break, two days, and Thanksgiving break, three days, are supposed to even out with spring break, five days. It starts at the beginning of the week, so it can act as the beginning of the break week, since Thanksgiving break is Monday through Friday. That way, it can serve as the beginning of the week section of the break.

Honestly, that is not enough for a break. This directly follows midterms and the semester’s second most stressful time. With that in mind, an extended break is in order.

However, there are some drawbacks to this. Extra time would need to be added to make up for the lost time. This time would be added to the beginning of the fall semester. With the semester already starting earlier than most, and the summer events ending only about two weeks before move-in, adding that extra time is impossible.

Then it would have to be added to the end of the semester. That would result in finals being pushed back a week and winter break being shorter. It would give us less time to enjoy the break, all for an extra three days.

Is the break too short? Maybe so. But would you rather have the two days or an extra week of school?
