The Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie was released on July 18, 2025, in Japan and Sept. 12, 2025, in the United States. The animated series succeeding it has four seasons and follows three main characters (English voice actors): Tanjiro Kamado (Zach Aguilar), Zenitsu Agatsuma (Aleks Le), and Inosuke Hashibira (Bryce Papenbrook). The plot follows Tanjiro and his demon sister on a journey to find a cure to make her human again while fighting other demons who are trying to stop them.
The plot of the movie is a continuation of the series and follows the main cast into the Infinity Castle. As a general recap of the end for those who haven’t seen the series: Nezuko Kamado (Tanjiro’s demon sister) pulls an impossible feat for demonkind and conquers the sun. With her newfound ability to walk in the sunlight, Muzan Kibutsuji (creator of demons) sends his strongest demons after the siblings in an effort to capture her and conquer the sun for himself.
The master of the Demon Slayer Corps sets up a trap for Muzan, finding his whereabouts and setting off an explosion with himself, his wife, his kids and the demon lord himself inside in an effort to weaken him. The Hashira (strongest demon slayers), as well as Tanjiro and his friends, show up and engage in battle with Muzan. The demon king finds himself backed into a corner and teleports everyone in the Demon Slayer Corps into the Infinity Castle.
Just like the name indicates, this castle is infinite.
The movie begins where the anime leaves off, with everyone falling into the castle. They all find their footing in different ends. While some fall in pairs, other slayers find themselves facing demons alone.
Zenitsu Agatsuma was one of the main examples of one-on-one battles in this movie.
“His fight is more impactful because he’s the underdog that we want to root for. He’s the more cowardly character with his friends,” said Hattie Huffman, vice president of the Japanese Anime Research Society (JARS) at the University of Tennessee at Martin. ” So I thought it was refreshing to see him go up against an upper moon by himself and survive and ice them.”
He is matched up against Upper Moon 6 (which is on the lower end of the strongest demons) and wins the fight in an amazing thunder breathing technique that he creates himself. It seems that this fight made an impression on a couple of students because of not only the amazing fight, but the heartbreaking backstory attached to it.
A tale of two boys raised and taught swordsmanship under the same mentor. Kaigaku grows and aspires for greatness, while never feeling contempt for his own skills. Zenitsu flourishes under his mentor’s guidance despite his own cowardly nature and becomes a well-accomplished demon slayer.
There was one scene in particular that became a tear-jerker for many.
“My favorite moment was when Zentisu was talking about Kaigaku in training, and he said it was like the box that held all of Kaigaku’s joy had a hole in it. The more joy that was poured into it, the more of it would leak out,” said Toni Collins, a big-time Demon Slayer fan from Memphis, Tennessee
She goes on to describe the animation of the scene, which was done beautifully. They used a box with a hole in it to describe Kaigaku’s joy and had gold poured into it to display his happiness. The imagery follows the saying; If the box has a hole in it where your happiness is supposed to go, how will it ever be filled?
Zenitsu slays Kaigaku as he finally realizes that he doesn’t feel sorry for the role he played in their mentor’s death and is left in critical shape near the end of the movie.
The main fight in this movie centers around Upper Moon 3 (Akaza), Giyuu Tomioka (Hashira) and Tanjiro. In this scene, there are beautiful shades of blue and yellow, which signify good and evil. There is also an abundance of water around this fight, which makes the color palettes of the characters stand out and really intensifies the main colors they all wear. Akaza’s main colors consist of pink and blue, Giyuu’s are the primary colors of blue, yellow and red, while Tanjiro’s are green and red.
This is more of an artistic analysis on my part, but I couldn’t help but admire the beautiful contrast that it brings to the viewer’s eye. The fight itself was animated well, but a big component of Demon Slayer is the memorable backstories that bring humanity back to the villains.
“My favorite backstory belonged to Akaza. I loved how heart-wrenching it was and how it made you think about what drove these people to become demons,” Collins said. “These demons all had human lives and had a conviction that they wanted to happen, but lost them when they became demons.”
In his backstory, Akaza wanted to become stronger to protect his wife, but when he became a demon, he lost half of his original drive. It reduced him in his demon life to only wanting to become stronger.
“It’s a classic tale of revenge gone awry,” said Dalton Herriott, president of JARS. “He comes from the bottom of society and is about to become the head of a dojo when his master and fiancée are murdered.”
The entire movie is beautifully animated and leaves nothing to be desired in the realm of storytelling. All it leaves you wanting is more. I highly recommend this movie and watching the rest of the trilogy when it comes out in 2027 and 2029.
The final fight is here; are you willing to take the plunge and join the demon slayers to defeat Muzan?
