Deep dive into Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer is a popular manga and anime series published by Koyoharu Gotouge.

It is no surprise that the movie released recently did numbers in theaters. On the note of the manga, there are plenty of scenes, parallels and backstories worth diving into.

If you have not read past the “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” arc or seen the movie, it would not be advised to read this article — unless you are like me and you want to know all the nitty gritty details about it.

Starting at the source of the manga, the blue spider lily. In order to conquer the sun, Muzan Kibutsuji believes that obtaining this flower will grant him the ability to walk in the sun.

The only issue is that he may have killed the only people who had a clue where they were.

It begs the question: since the Kamado family both knew where the blue spider lily was and was also ingesting it, would that offer any explanation as to why Nezuko was able to conquer the sun? During the Swordsmith Village arc, we see her conquer the sun and walk out in it unharmed, putting a massive target on her back. If they knew about the search for the spider lily before knowing how to turn her back into a human, would they have looked into that, too?

Throughout Demon Slayer, there are some really well-thought-out parallels that I have not seen a ton of fans drawing attention to. One is made abundantly clear in the manga and show, but it is such a fascinating thing to consider: Tanjiro and Nezuko versus Gyutaro and Daki.

They are both older brothers who want the best for their sisters. It made me wonder if an Upper Moon had come along instead of Giyuu, would Tanjiro have joined the other side too? They were only steps away from ending up like the doomed siblings Daki and Gyutaro.

There was also the chance of Gyutaro being approached by a demon slayer or Hashira and turning his life around. Both sets of siblings could have easily become the other with slightly different circumstances.

The next parallel that I would like to look at is the jarring similarity between Iguro Obanai and Douma. They were both raised in cults; one worshipped and the other was held as a sacrifice. If fate were reversed, would Obanai have taken the place of an Upper Moon instead, or a cult leader of some form?

There are plenty of options when considering just how similar they both are. The only big difference that I noticed shaping Douma was his lack of empathy. He is certainly a sociopath, but when you get down to the meat and bones of his character, he was still a child with gullible adults around him, feeding into the delusion.

Even before he had the ability to walk, these people worshipped him. Though we don’t get a solid reason for him becoming a demon, it makes sense why he chose that path. His followers have the chance to live on with him in eternity when they are consumed.

Obanai had a much different upbringing, though he also had eccentric eyes. He was held as a sacrifice, and his disdain for demons grew beyond that. He was saved by a Hashira. If there was a chance offered for him to become a demon to save himself, I wonder if he would have taken it.

There are plenty of theories in this series that we could touch on. These were just some that I noticed after reading the manga a few different times. The manga is a great one for starters or for people who like to look a little deeper.
