Campus provides classes for community

University Outreach is opening courses to include the community, not just students, including photography, foreign languages and exercise.

UTM is offering Digital Photography, which will be taught by Dr. Tom Gallien. Students will learn how to program a DSLR camera instead of relying on the “auto” setting.

The class is every Monday night in September starting Sept. 9, and then the first and third Monday nights in October. The class is held from 6-9 p.m. Registration is $145 for the entire 6-week course.

This course has been modified from two classes into one to better suit student’s time.

Sign language is a skill that anyone can use, and now anyone can learn it on campus. Beginning Sign Language I will be taught by Nancy Strong.

The registration fee for this class is $45.

The class will be three consecutive Saturdays starting Sept. 14, from 1-3 p.m. This course focuses on learning basic vocabulary and Nos. 1-20.

Strong will teach the differences between Signed Exact English, signed English and American Sign Language. Students will utilize in and out of class activities to enhance their basic expressive and receptive skills.

There is also Beginning Sign Language II and Beginning Sign Language III. Beginning Sign Language II will be offered in November. The class will be from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and the registration fee is still $45.

Beginning Sign Language III is available on the same dates as Beginning Sign Language I. Signs learned in I and II will be reviewed and more signs will be introduced. Students will learn the number signs all the way up to 1,000.

Jisun Collier will be teaching Korean Language and Culture Classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. The course will be held every Monday from Sept. 9 to Dec. 9.

Beginner classes are from 5:30-6:30 p.m. intermediate from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and advanced from 7:30-8:30 p.m. The course has a $30 registration fee that includes handouts and the textbook.

Students can learn the Korean alphabet, basic conversation and will have the opportunity to put their skills to the test at the Korean New Year party and Kimchi Festival.

Donna McBeth will be teaching Water Aerobics in two sessions: morning and evening classes.

The morning sessions are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:15-10:15 a.m. The evening sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

The registration fee for each session is $25 per person. However, signing up for both sessions at the same time is only $40.

The first sessions run from Sept. 3, 4 – Oct. 10, 16 depending on morning or evening days. The second sessions run from Oct. 22, 23 to Dec. 3, 4.

This class is recommended for anyone with joint pain or recovering from an injury, seniors and pregnant women.

There are many health benefits to exercising in the water, which includes cardiovascular stamina, strength, flexibility, improving balance, burning body fat and increases circulation.

University Outreach is also providing online options specializing in heath education, accounting and finance, computer applications, business, language and arts, teaching and education, technology, health, fitness, legal studies, writing and publishing, information technology as well as design and composition.
