2014 award season begins

From the beginning of a new year until summer, television networks are bombarded with award shows; this time period is commonly known as award season.

Award season began with the People’s Choice Awards on Jan. 8, the Golden Globes on Jan. 12, the Critic’s Choice Awards on Jan. 16 and most recently, the Screen Actors Guild Awards. There are also other awards shows coming up in the next few months.

  • The Annie Awards show recognizes the achievements in the animation field and are dominated by the Disney Group. The air date for the Annie Awards this year is Saturday, Feb.1 at 7 p.m.
  • The Visual Effects Society Awards show recognizes those who have excelled in the world of special effects and airs Saturday Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
  • The Black Reel Awards show was set up in the year 2000 with the aim of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of black actors. The Black Reel Awards air on Thursday, Feb. 13.
  • The Grammy Awards were established to recognize hit songs and albums of the past year and to acknowledge the performers and the individuals who helped produce the albums. The Grammy Awards air on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. on the CBS network.
  • The Academy Awards are given to actors, producers and directors from hit movies of the previous year. The Academy Awards air Sunday, March 2 at 7 p.m. on the ABC network.
  • The Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards is a special awards show set up to allow children to choose winners from each category. Each category is based on popular television shows. The Kid’s Choice Awards air on Saturday, March 29 at 8 p.m. on the Nickelodeon network.
  • The Academy of Country Music Awards is awarded to each country artist who wins in their category. The Academy of Country Music Awards will air on Sunday, April 6 on the CMT network.
  • The MTV Movie Awards is an annual film awards show that is presented to honor the best films produced throughout the year. The MTV Movie Awards air Sunday, April 13 at 9 p.m. on the MTV network.
  • The NewNowNext Awards show was launched by the LGBT-themed channel known as LOGO. The air date for the NewNowNext Awards show is in April of 2014.
  • The Juno Music Awards show is a Canadian award show that was created in 1970 to acknowledge Canadian musical artists’ achievements in all aspects of music. The Juno Music Awards air Sunday, March 30 on CTV network. The CTV network is a Canadian Television Network.
  • The Billboard Latin Music Awards show acknowledges Latin Americans artists and their achievements. The Billboard Latin Music Awards show airs on April 28 at 8 p.m. on Telemundo.
  • The Young Artist Awards show features young artists in the age group of 5 to 21 years old. The air date of the Young Artist Awards will be Sunday, May 4.
  • The GLAAD Media Awards show was created in the 1990s by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The GLAAD community bestows this award to honor various branches of media for their outstanding representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Awards will be Saturday, April 19.
  • The Billboard Music Awards were created to honor the music artists and other individuals within the music industry for their achievements throughout the previous year. The Billboard Music Awards will air in May 2014.
