NPHC gears up for annual fall step show

On Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center, UTM will have its annual National Pan-Hellenic Council stepshow.

There is still time to purchase tickets in the University Center at the information desk for $10. Prices will rise to $15 on the night of the event.

The show will begin at 7 p.m. with performances from UTM’s chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, and Zeta Phi Beta.

The NPHC step show has been a part of Martin’s homecoming festivities for over 10 years, and the battle for the first-place prize and trophy is at its peak as the day gets closer.

“Being that this is my first time stepping, I am prepared to put on a great show and continue to uphold the winning title that my chapter is known for,” said Carmen Norfleet, corresponding secretary of Delta Sigma Theta. “You have to keep that mindset. You have to want to win, but at the end of the day it’s all about having fun and supporting one another.”

The first, second, and third place winners from the fraternity and sorority categories will each receive a trophy, and the first place finisher in each category will win an additional $1,000. Last year’s winners were Delta Sigma Theta of the sororities and Phi Beta Sigma of the fraternities.

NPHC organizations have been known for stepping and doing step shows since the 1970’s. While at first these competitions were mainly for fraternities rather than sororities, over the years it has become increasingly popular for both groups to participate in these acts.

“We take pride in our stepping and understand that it takes hard work, dedication, and creativity to win a step show,” said Corey Bostick, vice president of Phi Beta Sigma. “We strive to display these qualities this year, and with this being our centennial year, we hope to take home the 1st place trophy. Best [of] luck to the others.”

This is an intense time for performers of the organizations participating, and those who plan to attend the show are undoubtedly ready to see what each group has to bring to the table.
