5 dorm-safe DIY decor ideas for Thanksgiving

As the fall months begin and Thanksgiving approaches, many students are looking for ways to decorate their dorms for the season.

The easiest way for college students to get the best bang for their buck is to make DIY decor. Websites like Pinterest and YouTube are littered with so many craft ideas that it can make your head spin. Here are five easy DIY’s to decorate your room for fall.

Hanging Sparkly Leaves

1. Take leaves from the quad.

2. Paint them in sparkling gold, brown, red and other fall colors.

3. Take a hole-punch, making a hole in the top of the leaf.

4. Tie a ribbon through it.

Now you have sparkly leaves to hang on your wall!

Pumpkin Rolls

1. Take full toilet paper rolls from your bathroom.

2. Cut a 22 inch by 18 inch piece of fall-themed fabric.

3. Wrap it around the toilet paper.

4. Take a small stick from outside and stick it in the center of the toilet paper.

5. Tie it all together with a ribbon.

Now you can decorate your room with colorful pumpkins.

Alternatively, if you can’t afford to use up your precious teepee on crafts, opt for stuffing your fabric with unworn socks or not yet recycled Pacer issues.

Turkey Door

1. Take white construction paper and cut out two large circles.

2. Take black construction paper and cut two smaller circles that are able to fit into the white circles.

3. Then, take orange construction paper and cut out a triangle that is proportionate in size to the circles.

4. Tape these to your door to make the face of a turkey.

5. Take red construction paper and cut out a thick, squiggly line, which will be the turkey’s wattle.

With this, your turkey can be complete, or you can add an extra step by:

6. Cutting out feathers from red, green, yellow and brown construction paper.

If you’re feeling extra crafty you can also pick up some feathers from your local craft section to jazz-up your beautiful bird.

Candy Corn Banner

1. Take several paper plates and paint the very center of them white.

2. Next, paint outside of the center to the ruffled edge of the plate yellow.

3. Paint the ruffled edge orange.

4. Let the plates dry.

5.Cut the plates into triangles.

6. Take two triangles and glue them together with the painted sides facing out.

7. Make sure you leave enough space at the top of the triangle to run a string through.

Now you have a candy corn banner to hang in your room!

Cork Pumpkin

1. Buy 25 corks from your local craft section, or save them up throughout the year.

2. Dip each end of all but one of the corks into orange paint.

3. Let them dry.

4. Arrange the corks in rows and hot glue four on the bottom, then five on the next row, then six, then five and then four.

5. Take the last remaining cork and cut it in half.

6. Glue it to the top for the stem.

7. Cut out leaves from green felt and glue them to the stem.

8. Tie twine around the stem to represent the vine and your pumpkin is finished!

Talk about a rustic fall craft!
